In Summary

KenGen said its geothermal power plants generated 13,678 megawatt-hours (MWh), while hydropower stations contributed 10,915 MWh to the national grid.

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) supplied more than 57 percent of the country’s daily electricity needs amid a sharp rise in national energy demand, according to new data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

In a statement issued Friday, KenGen said its geothermal power plants generated 13,678 megawatt-hours (MWh), while hydropower stations contributed 10,915 MWh to the national grid.

Among the hydropower facilities, the Kiambere plant alone delivered 2,908 MWh, with others such as Gitaru, Kamburu, and Masinga providing crucial support to stabilize power supply and reduce electricity costs.

“We remain committed to providing reliable and affordable electricity to support Kenya’s economic growth,” said KenGen Managing Director and CEO Eng. Peter Njenga.

“Through our 10-year ‘Green to Grid’ (G2G) strategy, we plan to add 1,500MW of new capacity from renewable sources, including geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar.”

KenGen emphasized the importance of its geothermal output in maintaining consistent baseload power, a key factor in reducing dependency on costly thermal power imports.

The company's renewable-heavy portfolio aligns with the government’s broader push for cleaner, more sustainable energy production.

On the day when total national energy demand peaked at 42,943.11 MWh, including supply from thermal, wind, and regional interconnections, KenGen noted that its consistent generation from domestic resources was central to maintaining grid reliability.

Eng. Njenga also underscored the urgent need to upgrade energy infrastructure to keep pace with Kenya’s growing power consumption, driven by industrial expansion and urbanization.

KenGen’s current installed capacity stands at 1,786 MW, with more than 93 percent of that generated from renewable energy sources: hydroelectric (826 MW), geothermal (754 MW), and wind (25.5 MW).
