The Mombasa County Government has recovered the body of a man buried in the rubble of a building that was demolished last week, says Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.

Taking to his X account, Governor Nassir said the recovery followed close collaboration between the bereaved family and the county teams.

"We confirm the recovery of the body of Yusuf Ali Abdi. We are grateful to everyone who played a part in this difficult and emotional operation. On behalf of the County Government of Mombasa and the people of this great county, I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the late Yusuf Ali Abdi," wrote Nassir.

"This is a painful loss, not only to those who knew him personally, but to our entire community."

Governor Nassir also offered to support the deceased's family.

"We stand in full solidarity with the bereaved family during this profoundly difficult time and wish to assure them of our continued support," he said.

"May the Almighty grant you strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead. We also pray that the soul of Yusuf Ali Abdi finds eternal rest."

The development comes after the Governor revealed that specially trained sniffer dogs from the Regional National Police Service had been deployed to bolster the search and recovery operation.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) carried out a controlled demolition of a structurally unsound building located on Abdel Nasser Road.

This demolition brought to a close a tense chapter, during which local officials had issued repeated warnings about the building's potential collapse following a major structural failure.
