In Summary

Between April and June 2025, EPRA conducted 5,966 tests at 1,331 fuel sites to ensure compliance with petroleum quality standards.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has uncovered 17 fuel stations and transporters across the country involved in selling adulterated or export-bound fuel in the local market, raising fresh concerns over fuel quality and public safety.

Between April and June 2025, EPRA conducted 5,966 tests at 1,331 fuel sites to ensure compliance with petroleum quality standards. While 98.72% of the stations met the required standards, 17 sites, representing 1.28%, were found to be non-compliant.

“The Authority is committed to protecting consumers and ensuring that petroleum products sold in Kenya meet the required quality,” EPRA stated.

Some of the violations included mixing diesel with domestic kerosene, selling fuel meant for export locally, and offering fuel with high sulphur content.

In Uasin Gishu, a suspected illegal fuel site in Cheptiret was found with diesel believed to be smuggled and intended for export.

The matter is currently before the court. Another station in the same area, Alakbary Energy Service Station, was selling diesel laced with kerosene.

The facility was allowed to reopen after paying penalties and taxes totalling  Sh105,457.

In Siaya County, Eunik Investment Filling Station was shut down for selling adulterated diesel.

Similarly, Mayafra Filling Station in Bungoma was closed after being found with diesel containing high sulphur levels, a grade designated for export use.

In Nakuru, a truck intercepted at Githioro Police Station was ferrying diesel both high in sulphur and mixed with domestic kerosene.

Another truck was impounded at Mau Summit Police Station for transporting smuggled export-bound diesel adulterated with kerosene.

In Narok, EXTRA Energies Filling Station in Suswa was caught selling both export-grade petrol and adulterated diesel. It resumed operations after paying Sh282,345 in taxes and penalties.

A major violation was reported at Sakina Service Station in Tassia, Nairobi, which was found selling super petrol meant for export. The station was reopened after paying Sh2,866,116 in taxes and fines.

More cases were reported across the country, including:

•Osere City Filling Station in Busia, shut for selling high-sulphur super petrol.

•Patience Filling Station in Tharaka Nithi, closed for similar offences.

•Adenya and Paru Filling Stations in Busia and Tharaka Nithi, respectively, both offering diesel adulterated with kerosene and meant for export.

“Fuel adulteration harms vehicles and endangers the lives of Kenyans,” EPRA emphasized.

In Mombasa, an illegal fuel site in Portreiz was found selling kerosene-mixed diesel, with the case pending in court. Another illegal operation was uncovered in Samburu, Kwale County, also involving adulterated diesel.

In Machakos, the MEIFAM Petroleum Filling Station in Kathaana was closed for selling diesel with high sulphur content.

EPRA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring fuel sold in Kenya meets safety and environmental standards, warning that any violations will attract severe penalties
