AGRA President Alice Ruhweza highlighted the organization’s investments in Kenya, including Sh116 million towards the implementation of seed policy.

The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to supporting Kenya’s efforts in transforming its agricultural sector and ensuring national food security.

AGRA President Alice Ruhweza gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe at Kilimo House in Nairobi on Friday, July 25, 2025.

Accompanied by AGRA’s Director of Policy and State Capability Boaz Blackie Keizire and Kenya Country Director, John Macharia, Ruhweza highlighted the organization’s investments in Kenya, including Sh116 million towards the implementation of seed policy and the transition to an e-voucher subsidy system.

She also announced Kenya’s inclusion in AGRA’s new youth-focused initiative that aims to create employment opportunities along the agricultural value chain, alongside continued support for training Kenyan seed breeders at postgraduate level.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, CS Kagwe briefed AGRA on the government’s strategic plans to revitalize agriculture through key reforms.

These include a review of emergency food security policies, the rollout of ICT systems to support farmers and e-governance, expansion of fertilizer and seed insurance, and training through agricultural colleges and 4K clubs.

The CS also underscored the importance of reducing dependency on food imports by boosting local production of rice, wheat, yellow maize, and palm oil.

Discussions also touched on improving warehousing, strengthening extension services, enhancing donor coordination, and implementing a robust devolution policy in agriculture to eliminate duplication and improve impact.

AGRA pledged to work closely with the government in strengthening resilience among farmers, helping them adapt to shocks brought by climate change and market volatility.

The talks come as the government explores the expansion of subsidized agricultural inputs to benefit large-scale producers and efforts to unlock the economic potential of arid and semi-arid regions through strategic water infrastructure investments.

AGRA’s broader mission is to foster inclusive and sustainable agricultural transformation by increasing productivity, incomes, and food security for smallholder farmers across Africa.

Its work spans improved access to quality seeds and fertilizers, development of climate-smart crops, and the promotion of modern farming techniques linked to functional markets and agribusiness value chains.
