Arsenal will face Spanish champions Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League following the completion of the round of 16 fixtures Wednesday night.

The Gunners, 9-3 aggregate winners over PSV Eindhoven in their last 16 tie, will face Madrid who overcame bitter city rivals Atletico Madrid in their knockout tie, with the heated match decided on penalties in the aftermath of a 2-2 aggregate score after 120 minutes at the Wanda Metropolitano.

English midfielder Connor Gallagher gave Atleti a 1-0 lead on the night but following a 2-1 loss in Madrid, penalties were needed to separate the two sides.

Ultimately, a controversial moment made the difference, with Atletico striker Julian Alvarez denied via VAR after he was adjudged to have kicked the ball twice after slipping.

Madrid converted all their penalties to end up 4-2 winners. Atletico boss Diego Simeone was understandably unhappy with the events led by VAR.

"To anyone here: raise your hand if you saw that Julián touched the ball twice in the penalty. Come on! And? Ready? Nobody raises theirs. Another question”.

“I’ve never seen VAR call to review a penalty in a shootout”, he told the press after the match as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

In other quarterfinal fixtures set in stone, Bayern Munich will take on Inter Milan where old rivalries will be renewed. The two faced each other in the final in 2010, Inter coming out on top 2-0 under Jose Mourinho.

In another interesting clash, Aston Villa will face French outfit PSG who dispatched Liverpool in their round of 16 tie Tuesday.

PSG are looking to win their first ever title, while Villa who are making a comeback to the European elite, will be a dangerous team to face.

Villa dismissed Belgian champions Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate after a 3-0 success at Villa Park Wednesday night.

On-loan forward Marcus Rashford who has had a strong impact at Villa Park since his January arrival shone on the night to send Villa Park into a frenzy.

"Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, this is the level and we are in this level. We have to be proud, he was quoted by the Independent.

Quarter Final ties will be played on the nights of 8 and 9 April, with the return legs to be held a week later on 15 and 16 April.
