40 health facilities suspended over Social Health Insurance non-compliance

The Social Health Authority said the listed facilities will not be entitled to any benefits during the suspension period
The Social Health Authority has suspended 40 health facilities across the country for non-compliance with the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023.
In a notice published in the Kenya Gazette on August 7, 2025, the Authority said the listed facilities will not be entitled to any benefits under the Act during the suspension period. The move was made under section 48(6) of the Act.
Among the affected hospitals are major and well-known facilities, including Rachuonyo County Hospital in Homa Bay, The Webuye Hospital Limited in Bungoma, and ABM Specialized Hospital in Nairobi.
Other facilities in the list are spread across various counties, including Kisumu, Kakamega, Kilifi, Kajiado, Mandera, Busia, Vihiga, and Kirinyaga. Nairobi County had the highest number of suspended facilities, with at least eight affected.
The notice was signed by Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Social Health Authority.
She emphasized that the suspensions are in line with legal provisions and urged all health facilities to adhere to the requirements of the Social Health Insurance Act.
The suspension means affected facilities cannot receive reimbursements or benefits from the Social Health Authority during the period they remain non-compliant.
The Social Health Insurance Act, 2023, introduced a new framework for universal health coverage in Kenya.
It replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and requires all health providers to meet specific standards to be eligible for government support.
