Faith Kipyegon cemented her place amongst athletics' greatest athletes with a resounding 1500 metre win at the ongoing World Athletics Championships currently taking place in Tokyo, Japan, Tuesday, 16 September 2025.
Following an astute run, the already thrice-crowned world champion claimed her third world title in a row over 1500m after a run of 3:52.15, finishing just ahead of fellow Kenyan teammate Dorcus Ewoi, who clocked 3.54.92.
Australia's Jess Hull narrowly held on to bronze with 3:55.16, just ahead of Kenya's Nelly Chipchirchir, who managed a time of 3.55.25.
Kipyegon, the greatest female mile runner in history, added a record fourth world title in the 1500m to her three Olympic gold medals in the same event. A truly outstanding record.
Kipyegon, 31, led from start to finish and prevailed by 2.77 seconds, the largest margin of any of her seven global 1500m titles. She is the first woman to win four world titles in any distance-running event.
Kipyegon is on a four-year, 22-meet win streak in the 1500m, having broken the world record in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
On Saturday, Kipyegon is expected to go head-to-head in the 5000m with fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chebet, the Olympic and world champion and world record holder in the 10,000m.
Kipyegon won the 5000m at the last worlds in 2023. Chebet beat Kipyegon for 2024 Olympic gold in the event.
The win represents Kenya's third Gold Medal at the Championships, a smart return halfway through the competition, which ends on September.
