Group Managing Director and CEO Allan Kilavuka stated that the Dreamliner will resume operations on July 22.

Kenya Airways has announced a major milestone in its recovery efforts, confirming the return of one of its grounded Dreamliner jets to service. The move is expected to significantly ease the airline’s ongoing capacity constraints, which began in late 2024.

Group Managing Director and CEO Allan Kilavuka stated that the Dreamliner will resume operations on July 22. The aircraft is one of three that were previously grounded due to global supply chain challenges and engine shortages.

The reinstatement of this long-haul aircraft is set to increase the airline’s seat capacity to 85%, helping to relieve pressure on the fleet and enhance passenger experience.

Kilavuka also revealed that the second Dreamliner is expected to return to service by September 25, 2025, while the third will follow by December 19, 2025.

In a broader fleet upgrade, Kenya Airways plans to introduce three new narrow-body aircraft by the fourth quarter of this year. These additions will provide 528 extra seats and expand belly cargo capacity by 239%, offering both passenger and freight improvements.

“This marks a key achievement for our fleet recovery and operational growth,” Kilavuka noted. He added that the strategic fleet restoration and expansion would strengthen the airline’s ability to meet increasing demand.

The CEO acknowledged recent challenges, including flight cancellations and schedule changes, attributing them to prolonged delays in accessing aircraft components. He assured customers that measures are underway to reduce future disruptions.

“We are aware of how these interruptions have affected our travellers and are working diligently to restore normalcy,” Kilavuka said.

Kenya Airways is also streamlining its route network and enhancing efficiency to improve reliability across its services. Kilavuka commended the technical team and industry partners for their efforts in bringing the Dreamliner back to service and thanked all staff members for their resilience and dedication.

With the return of its wide-body jets and the arrival of new aircraft, the airline says it is committed to offering better comfort, reliability, and capacity as it continues navigating the post-COVID recovery path.
