His appointment comes after the retirement of two long-serving members of Absa’s board

Former Central Bank of Kenya chair Mohammed Nyaoga has been appointed to the board of Absa Bank Kenya as an independent non-executive director, with his term set to begin on August 1, 2025.

His appointment comes after the retirement of two long-serving members of Absa’s board. Japheth Olende exited the board on May 22 after seven years, while Patricia Ithau stepped down earlier on March 31, having served for nine years.

In a statement, Absa Bank Kenya said it expects to benefit from Nyaoga’s deep background in corporate law, finance, litigation, and governance as the lender continues to navigate a changing and complex business environment.

“The board looks forward to benefitting immensely from his deep understanding of complex regulatory frameworks, risk management, and governance best practices – skills that are essential for navigating today’s dynamic financial landscape,” the statement read.

“His proven leadership across both private and public sector boards, as well as his invaluable service to national and international institutions, positions him as an asset to Absa Bank Kenya.”

Nyaoga brings a long and distinguished career to the Absa board. He previously served as chair of Ecobank Kenya from July 2014 until 2015, when he was appointed CBK chair. He held the position for eight years until his retirement in June 2023.

He is currently the senior partner at Mohammed Muigai LLP and has practised law for over four decades. His work has spanned various sectors, with a focus on civil and commercial matters.

In addition to his legal and governance experience, Nyaoga is a recognised expert in corporate governance training, working closely with the International Monetary Fund. In 2023, he led the IMF external experts panel tasked with reviewing governance practices of central banks across the globe, aimed at curbing the risk of loan mismanagement and payment defaults.

Earlier this year, he was also appointed chair of the African Development Bank Group’s Disclosure and Access to Information Appeals Panel, further reinforcing his footprint in regional and international finance governance.
