Frank Caprio, the widely admired American judge celebrated globally for his compassion in the courtroom, has died at the age of 88 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, his family confirmed that he “passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.”

They described him as a man “beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”

“His warmth, humour, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him,” the statement read.

Caprio gained worldwide recognition through his television series Caught in Providence, which showcased real cases from his Rhode Island courtroom.

His unique approach, blending humour and empathy, made him stand out in a field often seen as rigid.

Short clips of his rulings frequently went viral, showing moments where he chose to extend leniency to those in difficult situations.

He was also remembered beyond the courtroom as a devoted family man.

His family noted that “he will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.”
