In Summary

According to the Commonwealth Games Secretariat, Canada, India, Nigeria, plus two others have all publicly confirmed their interest in the Games in 2030.

Despite initial fears that Glasgow 2026 might be the last-ever Commonwealth Games, several nations have lodged official expressions of interest to host the competition in 2030 and 2034.

Scotland's largest city stepped in last year with plans for a scaled-back Games next summer after Australia's state of Victoria withdrew for financial reasons.

Before Glasgow came in, there had been fears that the games had become a burden in the face of several already existing high-profile world events populating the calendar.

The Glasgow games will see a scaled-down format that has made it more financially viable.

The proposed changes to the event include fewer sports, fewer athletes, and fewer venues.

They have as such lessened the overall hosting cost and enticed other potential hosts to look at future stagings.

According to the Commonwealth Games Secretariat, Canada, India, Nigeria, plus two others have all publicly confirmed their interest in the Games in 2030, while New Zealand are one of two nations looking at the 2034 edition.

In January, the 74 Commonwealth nations were invited to lodge notes of interest, and seven responded positively.

The bids were collected from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania and will have the feasiblity of their bids examined over the next five months to determine the best host countries.

It is expected that the hosts of the 2030 Games will be finalised in November.

"We are thrilled with the incredible interest from four of our six regions," said Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir.

"We cannot understate the hugely significant role Scotland has played, having the foresight, tenacity, and innovative thinking to step forward and host in 2026."

The event has been awarded to, but never been held in the African continent.

The South African city of Durban had won the rights to host the games in 2022 but they'll were later stripped of the opportunity following declaration of financial issues.

Kenya has an illustrious record at the games. The country has attended 17 Commonwealth Games beginning in 1954 and has so far only missed the 1986 Games.

Kenya has won 258 Commonwealth Games medals overall, mostly in athletics and boxing, with thirty-four coming from a single event, the 3000 metre steeplechase, a well known Kenyan specialty where no athlete but a Kenyan has won a medal since 1994.
