IPOA Begins Probe Over Shauri Moyo and Majengo Shootings
In Summary

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority now says it’s investigating shooting incidents involving police officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station, located in Starehe Constituency, Nairobi County.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority, (IPOA) now says it’s investigating shooting incidents involving police officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station, located in Starehe Constituency, Nairobi County.

In a statement on X, IPOA chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan said, the first incident occurred at approximately 2040 hours on 4th March 2025 near Majengo Social Hall.

It involved officers attempting to arrest a young suspect, an action that allegedly attracted other youths in the area, says the statement.

“This escalation resulted in the shooting and serious injury of a young man, estimated to be between 17 and 20 years old. His subsequent death while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National and Referral Hospital triggered demonstrations in the area on 5th March 2025, leading to further injuries suffered by members of the public and police officers,” says Hassan

“Further, there was extensive destruction of property including government buildings and motor vehicles.”

Hassan says the the Authority's rapid response and forensic investigations team, accompanied by officers specialized in monitoring police conduct during public order management operations-responded to the incident.

“The team has been tasked with gathering all relevant information to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and assessing how the police handled the demonstrators,” he adds.

IPOA has also condoled with the families and friends of the deceased and wished quick recoveries to all who suffered injuries.

Meanwhile the Authority has dispatched a team to monitor police conduct during the management of public order during the demonstrations that have been ongoing at Kakuma refugee camp.

At least four people are reported to have sustained gunshot wounds as police clashed with protesters at the camp after receiving news that their food allocations would be cut because of funding problems.

The UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR, confirmed that four refugees and a local government official had been injured when police intervened to stop the protesters at the Kakuma refugee camp on Monday.
