The Kenya Union of Gig Workers (KUGWO) has expressed outrage over the bizarre death of Ladi Anzaki Olubumni, a Nigerian national and employee of Teleperformance Kenya, a firm contracted to moderate TikTok content.

Olubumni, was reportedly found deceased in her apartment in Nairobi on March 7, 2025, after her absence from work went unchecked for three days.

“This incident exposes serious failings in employer duty of care and highlights long-standing concerns about worker mistreatment, exploitation, and denial of fundamental rights within the content moderation industry,” read a statement by Ellam Brian, the union’s acting Secretary.

Reports indicate that Olubumni had repeatedly requested leave and a return ticket home as per her contract at Teleperformance Kenya but was unjustly denied.

The union is now urging the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to determine the exact circumstances. surrounding Olubumni’s death.

It is also demanding that the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection investigate labour law violations, wage deductions, and worker mistreatment.

“We strongly condemn any attempts by Teleperformance management to silence employees who are speaking out,” says the union.

“Reports that workers have been instructed not to discuss the incident publicly further demonstrate a toxic workplace culture that prioritizes corporate interests over worker safety and welfare.”

On their part, Teleperformance Kenya has issued a public statement denying allegations that Olubunmi was denied leave.

"Any claims that the employee was denied leave are baseless and not true," stated the telecommunication company.

"We have also not prohibited any employees from speaking about the employee's unfortunate passing or their working conditions."
