Victor Wanyama marked his return to Scottish football with a red card as his side, Dunfermline ended up on the losing end in league action Saturday evening.

Dunfermline lost 3-0 to Ayr United in the Scottish second tier on Saturday to cap a poor first display for the former Southampton, Tottenham, and Celtic FC midfielder.

Wanyama was shown a straight red card just 19 minutes after coming off the bench for his first appearance under Neil Lennon.

The 33-year-old was sent straight off by referee Iain Snedden for a handball. He was officially sent off on 84 minutes.

Dunfermline were already 2-0 down to Ayr United when Wanyama received his marching orders.

Conor Mclenan had opened the scoring on 43 minutes, with Jamie Murphy adding a second on 68.

Ethan Walker added a late third for Ayr to rub salt into Lennon and Dunfermline's wounds.

The loss means that Dunfermline remain second bottom in the Championship with 27 points from 30 matches played. They currently trail leaders Falkirk by 39 points. Ayr United are second.

With Dunfermline second bottom, it means that they could be set for a playoff run.

According to the rules for promotion and relegation, the bottom-ranked club in the Championship is automatically relegated while the 9th-placed club undergoes a play-off with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed clubs from League One.

They host Livingston in their next League match April 2, 2025.
