Moi University dons call off their three-week strike

The strike has been ongoing since August 20, 2025, as the lecturers demand the implementation of the return-to-work formula signed on November 30, 2024, with the University council.
Moi University dons have called off their strike after reaching an agreement with the university council, ending a three-week standoff.
The strike has been ongoing since August 20, 2025, as the lecturers demand the implementation of the return-to-work formula signed on November 30, 2024, with the University council.
According to the University's Academic Staff Union (UASU) branch Secretary General, Dr. Busolo Wekesa, the union and the University management negotiated on several issues raised and agreed to resolve them on an issue-by-issue basis.
He also noted that the council agreed to withdraw the redundancy letters that had been issued to the members of the staff.
"Those who received redundancy letters will return to work as the university council has agreed to withdraw those letters," Wekesa stated.
They also agreed on the promotion of 56 lecturers who had been interviewed in December last year, and to review the statute on the appointment mode of deans, restoring the previous appointment procedure.
Dr. Busolo also said the lecturers who have furthered their studies abroad will be promoted instantly.
On statutory deductions and pending arrears, Wekesa said they have resolved to address the issue once they receive funds from the exchequer.
"We have also settled on arrears and pension whereby both parties agreed to settle the matter once the government disburses the funds," he noted.
The union also demanded that salaries for June and July 2025 should be paid as per the negotiated 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rates.
