Kisumu National Polytechnic has been ordered to close indefinitely after a week of student demonstrations disrupted classes and heightened tensions between learners and school administrators.
The decision was confirmed in an internal memo on September 19, 2025, by Chief Principal Cathrine Kelonye, following a resolution by the institution’s Interim Council.
“This is to notify all staff and trainees that the Interim Council of The Kisumu National Polytechnic held a meeting on Friday, September 19, 2025, and resolved to close the institution with immediate effect,” the memo stated.
The unrest began on Monday, September 15, when students took to the streets to protest allegations of corruption and fee hikes.
The demonstrations intensified over the week, prompting police deployment on Tuesday, September 16, to control the escalating situation. Clashes between law enforcement and learners were reported as students demanded intervention from the Kisumu County Government and the Ministry of Education.
Kelonye expressed regret over the closure but assured that the issues raised by students would be thoroughly investigated.
“The Council affirms that the inconvenient circumstances are highly regrettable and wishes to assure all the affected trainees, parents, and guardians that the concerns raised will be investigated,” she said.
Following the closure, students have been instructed to stay away from the campus until further notice.
Staff members, however, are expected to continue their duties unless otherwise directed. The interim council’s move aims to restore order and provide adequate time to address the grievances, ensuring the institution can resume normal operations safely.
