The Ministry of Education has called on all schools nationwide to actively join the Mazingira Day tree planting initiative set for October 10, 2025, in a bid to strengthen environmental protection and sustainable practices.
In a circular issued by Principal Secretary for Basic Education Julius Bitok on Thursday, the program will run under the theme “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”
“This year, the emphasis will be on the planting of fruit trees,” he stated. “Both public and private primary schools have been identified as the main venues for the exercise, with each school expected to plant a minimum of 2,000 fruit trees.”
The initiative is designed not only to support ecological conservation but also to boost the nutrition and well-being of learners.
“The objective is to promote environmental conservation while enhancing school-based nutrition through the establishment and growth of fruit tree orchards in learning institutions,” the statement read.
The focus on fruit trees this year seeks to merge environmental protection with practical benefits for learners, creating fruit orchards within schools that contribute to the nation’s greening efforts while supplying nutritional value.
To ensure wide participation, the Ministry has directed Regional, County, and Sub-County Education Directors to share the guidance with all head teachers and oversee the planning and execution of the activities. “You are directed to encourage the active participation of alumni, current learners and the local community in the exercise,” Bitok instructed.
All learners are expected to attend school on Friday, October 10, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., despite the public holiday, with education officers at all levels tasked with supervising the smooth conduct of the event.
“The participation of learners, teachers, and the community is crucial in fostering environmental stewardship and unity through shared responsibility,” the PS emphasized, urging everyone to cooperate fully to make Mazingira Day 2025 a success.
