Nigerian-American music star Davido has expressed solidarity with Kenyans following a day of intense anti-government protests that swept across at least 23 counties.

In a short message on his social media pages, the singer shared a call for unity and calm: “Peace and love to Kenya.”

The award-winning artist, born David Adeleke, is widely known not only for his music but also for speaking out on political and social issues across Africa.

He has visited Kenya twice—first in 2015 and again in 2024—and enjoys a strong fan base in the country.

Davido’s words came hours after a coalition of civil society organisations, including the Law Society of Kenya, the Police Reforms Working Group and the Kenya Medical Association, confirmed the deaths of eight protesters during the latest demonstrations.

The groups also reported that over 400 people were injured, with 83 requiring specialised treatment.

“At least eight protesters have been treated for gunshot wounds. Three of the injured are police officers. While these figures are confirmed by medics and human rights defenders, sadly, the exact figures may only be known in the course of time,” the statement read.

The protests, led mainly by youth, were organised to honour those killed in earlier demonstrations and to continue demanding justice, reforms and accountability.

At least 60 young people were reported killed during last year’s protests, which saw demonstrators breach Parliament in a bold act of resistance.

From Nairobi to Kisumu, Eldoret to Mombasa, the streets were filled with tear gas, gunfire, and angry chants as protesters clashed with police.

In several towns, including Nakuru, Nyeri, Thika, and Kitengela, normal activities came to a standstill as businesses shut down and transport was paralysed.

Demonstrators lit bonfires, barricaded roads and faced off with heavily armed officers.

Similar scenes were reported in counties such as Kakamega, Busia, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Kericho, Kisii, Laikipia, Uasin Gishu, Narok, Embu, Nyandarua, Homa Bay, Meru and Makueni.

Despite the heavy police response, many Kenyans took to social media and the streets to echo a growing call for justice and a government that listens to its people.

Davido’s message joined a chorus of solidarity as the country grapples with rising tension and demands for change.
