Kenya will not be presenting a film in the International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards after the Kenya Oscar Selection Committee determined that none of the submissions met the eligibility requirements set by the Academy.

In a statement by the Kenya Film Commission released on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the Committee confirmed that five films had been submitted for consideration and were reviewed on September 19 and 20.

The evaluation process was guided by the Academy’s eligibility criteria as well as the Committee’s assessment of artistic and technical quality in line with international standards.

According to the statement, the films were assessed against rules including demonstrable Kenyan creative control, a minimum seven-day theatrical run, the majority use of a non-English language, and a runtime of at least 40 minutes.

Despite the diversity of entries, none satisfied all the requirements.

“Our mandate is to select a film that meets the Academy’s eligibility rules while carrying the distinct voice of Kenyan cinema. No film was selected this year, but we remain committed to supporting submissions that can showcase Kenyan creativity and identity on the international stage,” said Committee Chairperson Eddah Kiruhi.

The Committee also commended the efforts of local filmmakers, noting the originality and strength of Kenyan storytelling despite the lack of an official entry this year.

It further expressed optimism about future participation, encouraging more filmmakers to pursue international standards in their work.

The 98th Kenya Oscar Selection Committee was chaired by Kiruhi, with members drawn from key industry associations, including the Writers Guild Kenya, Kenya Actors Guild, Producers Guild of Kenya and the Association of Animation Artists of Kenya.

The Committee acknowledged Century Cinemax Limited for providing screening facilities at Two Rivers Mall for this year’s reviews.

While the announcement may be a setback for the Kenyan film industry, it underscores the growing need for stronger investment in production quality and compliance with international standards.

The Committee expressed confidence that with continued creativity and dedication, Kenya will reclaim its place on the Oscars stage in the near future.

The Academy Award for Best International Feature Film honors a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States, primarily in a non-English language.

Unlike most other Oscar categories, eligibility does not require a US release. Instead, films must premiere in their home country within the Academy’s eligibility window and be shown for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial cinema.
