President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, on Saturday presided over the official handover of leadership at the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).

The ceremony saw the newly appointed Director, Mahad Mohamed Salad, formally take over from the outgoing Director, Abdullahi Mohamed Ali Sanbaloolshe.

The event, held at the NISA headquarters in Mogadishu, signals a transition in Somalia’s security leadership as the country continues to face internal and regional security challenges.

Mahad has been reappointed to lead Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) at a pivotal time for the country.

Known for his previous efforts in enhancing security in Mogadishu, Salad returns to the helm as Somalia navigates a crucial period of political transition.

President Mohamud’s move to reinstate Salad comes amid preparations for the country's anticipated shift from a clan-based electoral model to a one-person, one-vote system expected in 2026.

His return is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen national security and stabilize the political environment ahead of the historic democratic milestone.

The President commended both officials for their service to the nation, praising Sanbaloolshe for his dedication during his tenure and expressing confidence in Salad’s ability to lead the agency during a critical time.

“This leadership transition is part of our continued efforts to strengthen the country’s intelligence capacity and ensure that national security remains a top priority,” the President said.

New NISA Director Mahad is a seasoned politician and former national security adviser with extensive experience in intelligence and governance.

His appointment comes amid intensified counterterrorism efforts across the country and a broader push to reform Somalia’s security institutions.

Mahad is also recognized for expanding NISA’s operational presence and enhancing its intelligence capabilities in Mogadishu, particularly through more effective undercover operations.

Outgoing Director Sanbaloolshe thanked the President and the Somali people for the opportunity to serve the country.

He expressed support for his successor and called for unity in addressing the security threats facing the nation.

NISA plays a central role in Somalia’s fight against terrorism, organized crime, and foreign interference.
