In Summary

The contribution made by Amref-Kenya and the Centre for Health Solutions (CHS) includes 210 bicycles along with vital diagnostic supplies.

Siaya County has been strengthened in its battle against malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) thanks to a donation of equipment valued at Sh51 million.

The contribution made by Amref-Kenya and the Centre for Health Solutions (CHS) includes 210 bicycles along with vital diagnostic supplies and reagents used for routine testing of diseases such as schistosomiasis (bilharzia), soil-transmitted helminths (intestinal worms), and other NTDs.

Among the notable items donated were two AI-powered portable chest X-ray machines valued at Sh34 million, provided by CHS.

These devices are intended to boost diagnostic capabilities, strengthen referral processes, and enhance community follow-up efforts.

The equipment also addresses significant gaps revealed by a recent survey conducted across 31 health facilities in the county.

CHS CEO Dr. Paul Wekesa highlighted that the AI technology has led to a 5% increase in detecting asymptomatic TB cases, a crucial step in controlling the disease.

The donation was funded by PEPFAR, and Dr. Wekesa expressed hope that the new tools would contribute to reducing the TB burden in the region.

Gilbert Wangalwa, Deputy Country Director of Amref-Kenya, pointed out the rising incidence of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as bilharzia, intestinal worms, jiggers, and rabies in Siaya.

He noted that the Sh17 million worth of laboratory equipment will enhance early diagnosis and management of these illnesses.

"Siaya records some of the highest rates of NTDs in the country. Our aim is to improve identification, treatment, and diagnosis of these diseases," Wangalwa stated.

He added, "This donation forms part of our wider effort to eliminate NTDs by 2027."

Additionally, Siaya County, which faces one of the highest malaria prevalence rates in Kenya, received 210 bicycles for Community Health Promoters (CHPs) to support their work at the grassroots level in combating malaria.
