SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi said the payments followed a detailed review of claims submitted by July 1, 2025, to confirm compliance with contractual obligations.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has released Sh3 billion to eligible hospitals to support emergency, oncology, and dialysis services, as part of ongoing efforts to settle pending claims under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

In a statement issued Tuesday, SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi said the payments followed a detailed review of claims submitted by July 1, 2025, to confirm compliance with contractual obligations.

“Claims for Accident and Emergency, Haematology and Oncology, and Renal Care services have been reviewed and Sh3 billion has been disbursed to eligible facilities,” Mwangangi announced.

She also confirmed that payments for maternity and primary healthcare services will be released on Tuesday, July 22, following the completion of their respective reviews.

“Review of the Maternity package has been completed, and payments will be made on July 22, 2025,” she said. “Payments for primary healthcare services will also be disbursed on the same day.”

Mwangangi added that reviews for inpatient care, surgical packages, and other services are still underway, with disbursements expected in the next three weeks.

“Reviews for inpatient, surgical packages, and other services are ongoing. Payments for these will be released within the next three weeks,” she stated.

Hospitals that need clarification or support with reconciling their paid claims have been advised to reach out to SHA through its official communication channels.

The updates come amid a wider cleanup of the health insurance system, after President William Ruto recently disclosed that more than 1,000 hospitals had been shut down over fraudulent medical claims.

Speaking during a diaspora townhall meeting in London, the president said the closures were part of a crackdown on a network of facilities accused of inflating claims by misrepresenting services and creating ghost patients.

“We have closed down 1,000 fake hospitals, and we are closing a few more in the coming days because they want to change inpatient services to outpatient so they can claim more money,” Ruto said.
“We will shut them down and make sure the programme is clean.”
