KMPDC orders closure of hospital linked to Njoki’s mysterious death

KMPDC orders closure of hospital linked to Njoki’s mysterious death
In Summary

This directive follows a site inspection conducted on July 18 and emerging reports suggesting that a staff member from the facility may have been involved in Njoki’s death.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council has ordered the immediate closure of Chiromo Hospital’s Braeside branch, the facility where Toto Touch Chief Executive Officer Susan Njoki died under unclear circumstances.

The Council’s decision, issued in a letter signed by its CEO, David Kariuki on Friday, July 25, also instructed the hospital to evacuate all patients within 24 hours.

This directive follows a site inspection conducted on July 18 and emerging reports suggesting that a staff member from the facility may have been involved in Njoki’s death.

In the letter, KMPDC cited concerns arising from the inspection and additional reports indicating possible staff involvement in the incident.

“Following further reports indicating the possible involvement of a member of your staff in the death of Susan Kamengere Njoki, the Council issues the following directives effective immediately,” the letter reads in part.

The hospital is required to cease all clinical operations until further notice and submit an immediate response that includes Njoki’s post-mortem report and her patient documentation.

“You are hereby instructed to evacuate all patients within 24 hours of receipt of this letter, cease all clinical operations at the hospital until further notice, and respond without delay to the letter referenced above,” it added.

Njoki died on July 15, a day after she was allegedly taken by force from her home in Kileleshwa, injected with an unknown substance, and admitted to the hospital.

Audio recordings obtained from her before her death detailed the frightening ordeal in which several men stormed her house, forcibly restrained her, and administered injections, reportedly under instructions from her husband.

In the recording, Njoki described how two men held her down while two nurses injected her without explanation. She pleaded for answers but was met with silence, heightening her distress and confusion.

A post-mortem examination by a team of six pathologists later confirmed that Njoki died from manual strangulation. The report revealed that her death was caused by compression injuries to the neck, which led to a lack of oxygen in her bloodstream.

The experts further stated during a July 22 press briefing that she had died a few hours after eating, with undigested food found in her stomach.

The pathologists also clarified that Njoki died inside the hospital, not while being transported as earlier claimed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, adding a new twist to the already troubling case.
