Mediheal Group founder and former Kesses MP Swarup Mishra has strongly refuted allegations that his hospital was involved in exporting Kenyan kidneys, saying no local organ has ever left the country for transplant purposes.

Speaking in response to a government taskforce report that examined 476 kidney transplants carried out at Mediheal between 2018 and 2024, Mishra said all foreign patients arrived in Kenya with their own donors and the hospital played no role in organ sourcing.

“All foreign transplant patients brought their own donors. No Kenyan organ has ever been exported. Not even one,” he stated.

He made it clear that Mediheal does not take part in selecting donors or influencing patients in any way.

“The medical facility is not involved in donor selection, transaction, or any form of influence, pressure, bribing, or commercialization. We do not even suggest donors to patients,” Mishra said.

The report had recommended legal action against Mishra and three other senior doctors for alleged violations of transplant regulations, but he maintained that every procedure was lawful and done with the Health Ministry’s approval.

“Eligible candidates for renal transplant include patients referred by relatives or friends, and in-house kidney patients from our hospital,” he said, explaining how recipients are identified.

Mishra added that a full evaluation is done to determine if a patient is fit for a transplant, pointing out that in some cases, dialysis may be unnecessary if the condition can be reversed.

He said both recipients and donors go through comprehensive tests to confirm compatibility before any transplant is performed.

“Once brought by the patient, donors undergo a comprehensive workup to ensure compatibility,” he noted.
“This includes cross-matching, HLA typing, and gene mapping — which are essential to minimize or eliminate post-transplant rejection.”

Presenting data to support Mediheal’s record, Mishra said out of the 476 transplants, only 20 failed — well below the international rejection average.

“Of the 20, seven were acute and 13 were chronic,” he said.
“Eight cases were successfully rescued, meaning only 12 transplants were ultimately rejected. We have not lost a single donor. All donors are alive.”

He also responded to concerns about post-surgery deaths.

“Patient mortality for kidney transplants at our facility is 8 out of 476 cases,” he said.
“We define transplant-related mortality as death occurring within one month of surgery. Deaths occurring after two, three, or ten years are natural and unrelated to the transplant.”

Mishra dismissed the taskforce’s findings as false and aimed at tarnishing Mediheal’s name.

“This report is harmful to the integrity of our hospital. The claims are entirely unfounded and not supported by any credible evidence,” he said.
“We have nothing to hide. We remain committed to ethical, safe, and world-class healthcare.”

He also disclosed that the hospital had sent a legal notice to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle for what he described as misleading content in a documentary that led to the taskforce inquiry.

“We will cooperate with all relevant authorities,” Mishra said.
“And if any wrongdoing is found, we are ready to face the consequences — but we reject the lies and defamation.”
