Elections observer questions sudden addition of 6 IEBC commissioner candidates

The Elections Observation Group (ELOG) has raised concerns over the irregular inclusion of six additional candidates in the current vetting process for commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

ELOG is now seeking clarification after the total number of applicants increased from 105 to 111 as of Wednesday.

In a statement, ELOG expressed concern that the abrupt turn of events has sparked questions about transparency and accountability, particularly regarding the lack of public disclosure around the process.

The Group also urged the IEBC selection panel to maintain transparency and uphold integrity, calling for a clear explanation of the criteria used to include the additional candidates.

They emphasized that the process must strictly adhere to the relevant legal frameworks.

"The Panel should publicly explain the process used to identify and bring in the six applicants to uphold transparency and public trust in the process," read the statement in part.

The six individuals are Hassan Noor Hassan, Jibril Maalim Mohamed, Michaels Ben Oliewo, Charles Kipyegon Mutai, Stephen Kibet Ngano, and Joel Mwita Daniels.

Led by Nelson Makanda, the panel has yet to offer a convincing explanation, only claiming that the omission of the names was an oversight.

The interview process is expected to conclude by May 12, after which the Selection Panel will forward two nominees for the chairperson role and nine for commissioner positions.

President William Ruto will then appoint one chairperson and six commissioners from the submitted list.
