Safaricom PLC has announced a temporary disruption of M-Pesa services for three hours early next week for a system upgrade.
In a notice released to customers on September 19, 2025, Safaricom said the system upgrade is scheduled for Monday, 22 September 2025, from 12:30 a.m to 3:30 a.m.
All M-Pesa services, including airtime purchase, will be unavailable during that period.
"The timing of this maintenance activity has been planned to result in minimal inconvenience to our customers. During the maintenance, all M-PESA services, including airtime purchase, shall be temporarily unavailable," the statement read.
The telecom giant stressed that the upgrade was part of its ongoing commitment to provide secure, reliable, and seamless financial services to millions of Kenyans who rely on M-PESA for their daily transactions.
"For 18 years, M-PESA has transformed lives across Kenya by connecting customers to opportunities every day. This upgrade ensures we continue to deliver safe, secure, and worry-free financial products and services," the statement read in part.
The company has assured customers that the maintenance window has been carefully chosen to minimize disruption, as it falls during off-peak hours. Regular services are expected to resume immediately after 3:30 a.m. on the same day.
Safaricom has also issued an apology for any inconvenience the temporary disruption may cause and expressed appreciation for its customers' continued support.
Launched in 2007, M-Pesa has grown into one of the most widely used mobile money platforms in the world, playing a crucial role in Kenya’s digital and financial inclusion journey.
