Eight people lost their lives and several others were injured when a train collided with a Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) staff bus at a railway crossing near Morendat Farm in Naivasha on Thursday afternoon.

The bus was carrying employees home after their morning shift when it was struck by an oncoming Kenya Railways train while trying to cross the tracks.

In an official statement, both KPC and Kenya Railways confirmed the accident and said emergency teams were quickly deployed to rescue those hurt and begin an investigation into the cause of the crash.

The collision took place at a level crossing next to KPC’s Morendat Training and Conference Centre.

KPC Managing Director Joe Sang said the company’s emergency response teams acted immediately, working with local authorities to transfer the injured to hospitals in Naivasha.

“We are working closely with the medical teams and local authorities to ensure the injured receive the best possible care and to facilitate airlifts for the critically injured,” Sang said. Arrangements have been made to airlift those in critical condition for specialized treatment.

First responders from KPC, supported by local emergency services, led rescue operations at the scene, stabilizing victims and organizing their evacuation. Sang stressed that the company’s priority is supporting employees and their families during this difficult time. KPC has also activated its internal welfare and psychosocial teams to help staff deal with the trauma caused by the incident.

“We assure the public and all our stakeholders that we are doing everything possible to manage the situation and provide the necessary support to those affected,” Sang added. He promised to keep the public updated as new information becomes available.

Although the exact cause of the accident is still being investigated, reports indicate that heavy rain and foggy weather conditions around the time of the crash may have contributed to poor visibility.

Kenya Railways confirmed that their emergency team was dispatched quickly to assist and worked with police to evacuate the injured.

In a notice, Kenya Railways expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. The railway company also urged the public to be cautious when crossing railway lines to prevent future accidents.

“Motorists and the general public are advised to take caution when crossing the railway line at level crossings to avoid collision with approaching trains,” it said.

Both KPC and Kenya Railways pledged ongoing support for the affected families as investigations into the tragedy continue.
