Police in Baringo have recovered an illegal firearm after a resident of Tamkal Village, Kolowa Sub-County, voluntarily surrendered an AK-47 rifle with a magazine and two rounds of ammunition.
The weapon was handed over to the Sub-County security team and members of the local Peace Committee before being secured at Kolowa Police Station.
Authorities hailed the move as a significant step in promoting peace and security in the region, noting that voluntary disarmament plays a vital role in reducing armed conflict and criminal activity.
The National Police Service commended the community and Peace Committees for their cooperation and urged continued support through information sharing and surrender of illegal arms.
The surrender comes amid an intensified disarmament campaign in bandit-prone areas, including Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo counties.
Over the weekend, police recovered over twelve AK-47 rifles and sixty-four rounds of ammunition voluntarily surrendered by locals in the Kerio Valley region.
In a statement, the National Police Service says it has made remarkable gains in an ongoing disarmament exercise in areas including Kibiriem, Talai, Kaben, Koibirir, Ketut, and Chemwonyo.
“This latest surrender is a significant boost to the ongoing disarmament efforts and a clear sign of growing community trust and cooperation in the fight to end armed crime,” NPS said.
NPS urged all members of the public to surrender any illegal firearms and ammunition, and to embrace peaceful coexistence as the surest path to lasting security and development in the region.
