A man suspected of being involved in the violent assault of a woman in Narok County has been arrested, with police confirming that a search for more suspects is ongoing.

The attack, which was captured on video and widely shared online, showed a woman being beaten by several men in Mbenge, Ngarite area of Narok Central Sub-County.

National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga on Friday said officers responded immediately after the disturbing footage surfaced.

“The Service strongly condemns this egregious act, which constitutes gender-based violence, assault, and kidnapping. These are criminal acts punishable under Kenyan law,” read the statement issued on Friday.

Police rescued the survivor and rushed her to hospital for treatment, before launching investigations that led to the arrest of one suspect now in custody awaiting arraignment.

According to Nyaga, security teams have intensified the manhunt for others linked to the crime.

The spokesperson also urged members of the public to support the ongoing operation.

“We commend the public for providing crucial information that led to the arrest and appeal for more details to assist in bringing all perpetrators to justice,” he said.

Citizens can share information through toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112, or send tips via WhatsApp on 0709 579 000. They may also use the hashtag #FichuaKwaDCI on social media to report suspects.

Nyaga reaffirmed the police service’s resolve to protect vulnerable groups.

“The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms, and dignity, and will continue to be at the forefront in the fight against gender-based violence,” he added.

The video of the attack, which showed the woman lying on the ground crying as men struck her with sticks, has sparked outrage across the country.

Many Kenyans online condemned the assault and demanded speedy justice, calling for stronger action against violence targeting women.

The Law Society of Kenya also weighed in, with President Faith Odhiambo making it clear that such actions cannot be excused as tradition. She said: “This is not a cultural practice, rather an act of sexual violence, and such conduct cannot be countenanced.”

She further reminded that the constitution protects freedom of choice and condemns harmful practices that violate human rights.

“We call upon the police to promptly identify and arrest the perpetrators of this aggravated act of violence,” she added.

Police have assured the public that all those responsible will be tracked down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
