The nation woke to shocking news on Wednesday morning as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away in India, prompting urgent action from the highest levels of government.

President William Ruto immediately called a special meeting of the National Security Council at 10am and will later chair a Cabinet session at 2:30 pm to address the situation.

In light of the developments, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula adjourned the morning sitting of Parliament, informing lawmakers that the session would resume at 2:30 pm for an important announcement.

“I will invoke my authority under standing order number one and direct as follows: the sitting of this house is adjourned. We will have a sitting at 2:30 pm this afternoon when the speaker will give you some important communication,” he said.

Earlier today, reports emerged that the Orange Democratic Movement party leader collapsed while on a morning walk in India.

Initial reactions included messages of shock and grief, with ODM Communications Director Philip Etale posting simply, “I am deflated,” on social media before official confirmation.

Raila had been away from public view for over a month, with conflicting updates about his health. Last week, his brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, confirmed that he was recovering in India.

Indian authorities reported that he collapsed at an Ayurvedic facility and was rushed to a private hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:53 am Indian Time on Wednesday.

The President is expected to provide further details after the National Security Council meeting, while lawmakers will receive an official briefing this afternoon.
