Former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua has passed away.

News of his death first broke on social media and was later confirmed by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had been overseeing his treatment at a rehabilitation centre in Mombasa.

According to Sonko, Kimani died at the facility where he was receiving care. He added that a comprehensive statement would be issued once police conclude investigations into a suspected suicide.

“I am saddened to hear about the premature demise of former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre. It is believed that he may have taken his own life. I will issue a comprehensive statement once the police report is out,” Sonko said.

He also condoled with Kimani’s family and friends, praying for comfort during this difficult period.

“In the meantime, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kimani's family, friends, and relatives. I pray that God provides them with strength and comfort during this challenging time,” he added.

Kimani, 29, had for years battled bipolar disorder and spent long periods in hospital and rehabilitation centres.

His struggle, which he often shared publicly, sparked a national conversation about mental health awareness and the challenges faced by young professionals in the media industry.

Friends, colleagues, and leaders paid tribute to the once-promising journalist who rose to fame at just 19 years old, captivating audiences with his energy and originality.

Before joining Citizen TV, Mbugua worked with Nation Media Group, where his feature stories and lifestyle segments made him one of the most recognisable young faces on Kenyan television.
