The Kisumu County government has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities at Kibuye Market until further notice.
In a statement released through Governor Anyang Nyong’o’s official social media platforms on the night of Friday, April 25, 2025, the county explained that the move followed a comprehensive inspection by the Department of Public Health.
According to the statement, the department flagged several major public health hazards within the market, warning that they not only endanger the public’s well-being but could also fuel the spread of cholera.
The assessment highlighted several critical public health hazards at Kibuye Market, including a shortage of clean and safe water, poor management of solid waste, unsanitary toilet and ablution facilities, unsafe open cooking practices, blocked drainage systems, and the obstruction of access lanes.
"The City of Kisumu notifies the public, traders, and all concerned stakeholders of an urgent public health intervention at Kibuye Market, following an extensive review conducted by the Department of Public Health," the statement partly read.
It went on: "The department identified multiple public health risks at the market, posing a grave danger to residents' health and increasing the potential spread of cholera, which has been detected in parts of the city and surrounding areas."
The statement further announced: "In light of these findings and in accordance with Section 117 of the Public Health Act Cap 242, alongside Cap 254 and related regulations, the Department of Public Health has ordered the IMMEDIATE SHUTDOWN OF ALL ACTIVITIES at Kibuye Market until further notice (sic)."
Kisumu County emphasized that the prevailing conditions present an immediate threat to public health, particularly during the rainy season when the spread of waterborne diseases is more likely.
The closure will remain in effect until all identified public health hazards are fully addressed.
Following the temporary shutdown, market day operations for Kibuye Market will be moved to Uhuru Business Market.
“We also wish to inform the public and all traders that, during this period, Kibuye’s market day activities will be relocated to Uhuru Business Market," the statement added.
"The city has implemented necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth transition and minimize any disruptions to business."
The county further assured residents and stakeholders of its dedication to addressing the public health concerns swiftly.
"Every effort will be made to restore normal operations at Kibuye Market as soon as possible. The City of Kisumu remains committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for commerce," the statement concluded.
