Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced that the late leader’s body will be airlifted instead of transported by road, a change made to ensure a smooth, secure, and well-coordinated transfer from Kisumu to Bondo.

The body of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga will this evening leave Kisumu for his home in Bondo, Siaya County, where a night vigil will be held ahead of his burial on Sunday.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced that the late leader’s body will be airlifted instead of transported by road, a change made to ensure a smooth, secure, and well-coordinated transfer from Kisumu to Bondo.

Omollo said the decision followed consultations between the family and the National Funeral Steering Committee, noting that every arrangement had been made to uphold dignity and order during the final transition.

“The body of the former Prime Minister will be flown directly to Bondo. We want to make sure the transition from Kisumu to his home is done smoothly and respectfully,” he said.

He explained that public viewing at Mamboleo Stadium, where thousands have continued to stream in to pay their last respects, was initially set to end at 3 p.m. but could be extended depending on the turnout.

“We are looking at the possibility of extending the viewing hours to ensure all mourners get a chance to pay their final respects. We want to assure Kenyans that no one will be left out,” Omollo said.

The PS appealed for calm during the transition, urging mourners to honour Raila’s lifelong message of peace, unity, and national cohesion.

“Raila cherished peace and unity. As Kenyans, it is our duty to honour his legacy by ensuring peace throughout the mourning period, both here in Kisumu and in Bondo where the burial will take place,” he said.

Omollo reassured Raila’s supporters that the government is committed to safeguarding all citizens and continuing the unity the late leader stood for.

“The former Premier left us in the government and hands of President Ruto. You're safe there, and we should continue working with the government,” he stated.

He urged residents of Nyanza and Raila’s supporters across the country to maintain the spirit of cooperation and inclusivity that the late leader consistently advocated for.

Security has been heightened across Kisumu and Siaya counties, with personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces and National Police Service deployed to ensure seamless coordination and safety during the final rites.

Omollo praised the overwhelming turnout since the arrival of Raila’s body in Kisumu, describing it as a historic show of love and respect.

“We have to agree that in the history of this country, there has never been a farewell of this magnitude. This is Raila’s send-off, and it shows the impact he had on generations of Kenyans,” he said.

Thousands of mourners, religious leaders, and national figures are expected in Bondo for the night vigil, which will set the stage for Raila Odinga’s final farewell on Sunday.
