Siaya Governor James Orengo has described the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as an irreplaceable patriot and the greatest Kenyan to ever walk the earth, saying his passing has left a deep void in the nation’s heart.
Speaking during preparations for Raila’s final sendoff, Orengo said he never imagined a time would come when the country would bid farewell to a man who dedicated his life to justice, freedom, and the fight for democracy.
“I never believed that such a day would come when we do not have Jakom around. Kenya has lost one of its most consequential sons and patriot. I can say without fear of contradiction that Raila Odinga is the greatest Kenyan that ever lived,” he said.
He called for calm and urged residents to give the family and the organizing committee the space needed to prepare a dignified farewell for the fallen leader.
“For that reason, I appeal to all our people in the entire Republic, in Nyanza and Siaya, to give us time and space to have a distinguished sendoff for our son and leader Raila,” he added.
Orengo assured mourners that all necessary plans were being put in place to ensure a smooth and honourable farewell, describing Raila as a revolutionary whose contribution to Kenya’s political journey cannot be erased.
“A fighter, a revolutionary, a democrat; he deserves the best and a heroic send-off. We will make sure that all systems are in place for that great day of celebration of his life,” Orengo said.
He further noted that even though time was short, the team was working tirelessly to deliver a sendoff that matched Raila’s stature and lifelong service to the country.
On Friday night, hundreds of residents filled the streets of Kisumu in an emotional candlelight vigil that lit up the city in remembrance of Raila. The mood was a blend of pain and pride as mourners sang freedom songs and danced in honour of a man many called “Baba.”
From Kondele to Kibuye, Nyalenda, and Kisumu Boys roundabout, the sound of drums, vuvuzelas, and chants filled the air as thousands joined in song and tribute.
