Emmanuel Wanyonyi claimed the 800m crown at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, clocking a championship record of 1:41.86 to add world gold to his Olympic triumph.

The 21-year-old Kenyan fended off a strong charge from Canada’s Marco Arop, the defending champion, and Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who surged late to snatch silver in 1:41.90. Arop settled for bronze in 1:41.95.

Ireland’s Cian McPhillips set a national record of 1:42.15 in fourth, followed by Mohamed Attaoui, Max Burgin, Navasky Anderson, and Tshepiso Masalela.

It marked the first time in history that eight men have run under 1:43 in the same race.
