Liverpool forward Diogo Jota died in a road crash Thursday morning in Spain, an incident that has shocked the sporting world.

Jota died after the Lamborghini he and his brother Andre were travelling in, crashed at around 12.30am local time. Police say it appears a tyre burst as the car was overtaking causing the crash.

The 28 year old was a Liverpool player since 2020 and his death has shocked the sporting world, with tributes now pouring in for the Portugal international forward.

In a heartfelt statement, the Portuguese national team said in a statement that Jota was "not only a fantastic player with almost 50 caps for the national team, but also an extraordinary person" who was respected by teammates and opponents alike.

He had a "contagious joy" and was "a reference point in his own community", the statement read.

His national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to respond to the news of Jota's death.

"It doesn't make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, you had just got married, he said on his X page.

"To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world.  I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you, he said.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, who has played alongside Jota for the past three seasons, has posted this on Instagram:

"There are no words of comfort for so much pain. I will always remember you with your smile, as a good companion on and off the field, he stated.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said, "This is devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids."

Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool captain added: "RIP Diogo. Condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly sad time."

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer termed Jota's death as "devastating news".

"I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say our first thoughts are going to be with his family and his friends in particular." Liverpool fans, football fans and people who don't follow the sport at all "will be shocked by this", he added.

Luis Montenegro, Portugal's prime minister, says the crash is "unexpected and tragic."

"The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored Portugal's name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports, he offered.

UEFA, European football's governing body, announced a moment of silence would be observed at all Women's European Championship games on Thursday and Friday, including Portugal's tie against Spain.

The Football Association (FA) and the Premier League say they are "devastated" to hear of the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André.

"Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed," the Premier League said.

Jota leaves behind his wife Rute and three children.
