Kenyan officer injured in Haiti security operation

A Kenyan officer deployed under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti was injured on Tuesday, March 18, while on a security operation in Kenscoff’s Belot area.
MSS Spokesperson Jack Ombaka confirmed the incident and said that the officer was quickly evacuated to ASPEN Level 2 Hospital, where he's receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
"Today, Tuesday, 18th March 2025, a member of the MSS Kenyan contingent was injured while conducting a security operation in Kenscoff, within the Belot area.
The officer was promptly evacuated to ASPEN Level 2 Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention and is in stable condition," he said.
Ombaka expressed appreciation for the support shown toward the injured officer.
"We extend our gratitude to all Haitians of goodwill and others who have expressed their wishes for a swift recovery. We will continue to provide updates through our official social media channels as necessary," he said.
He also acknowledged the cooperation the MSS mission has received as it continues its operations in Haiti.
"I sincerely thank you all for your unwavering support and cooperation as we engage in this decisive phase of operations against criminal elements," he added.
The incident comes weeks after the MSS mission suffered its first casualty. Kenyan officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was killed on February 23 while on duty in the Western Artibonite region, 92 kilometers north of Port-au-Prince.
He was shot during an operation targeting armed groups and was airlifted to a hospital but did not survive.
Kaetuai’s body was repatriated to Kenya on March 10, arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 9:30 p.m., where it was received by Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, alongside the fallen officer’s father and wife.
The body was then moved to Chiromo Mortuary for preservation.
A post-mortem conducted at Chiromo Funeral Parlour confirmed that Kaetuai died from a single gunshot wound to the head, with excessive bleeding causing his death. A memorial service was held last week in Haiti’s Artibonite region to honor him.
The MSS mission, which includes Kenyan forces, is tasked with restoring security in Haiti, where criminal gangs have taken control of key areas.
