CHAN: Police announce road closures, diversions in Nairobi

In Summary

Police said motorists from Nairobi’s Central Business District heading to Thika Road towards Ruiru, Juja, and Thika should use Kiambu Road at Exit 4

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi on Friday, August 22, 2025, to facilitate the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).

In a statement, police said motorists from Nairobi’s Central Business District heading to Thika Road towards Ruiru, Juja, and Thika should use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, adding that there will be a roadblock at Muthaiga.

Vehicles using Thika Superhighway to access Mwiki are advised to follow the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route.

Those traveling from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru into the city centre should use either the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, as there will be a roadblock at the Ruiru Interchange.

Motorists from Githurai heading to the CBD have been directed to use Githurai 44 through Kiambu Road. Meanwhile, vehicles from the city centre heading to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium, without official access passes will only be allowed through the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

The NPS assured the public that additional officers have been deployed to manage traffic and urged motorists to cooperate with police on-site to ensure smooth flow.

Police further warned that stern action will be taken against anyone found flouting traffic rules.

Meanwhile, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya also affirmed that security has been beefed up at both Kasarani Stadium and across all fan zones.

"We want to assure Kenyans that security has been heightened at Kasarani and in all fan zones. Adequate deployment has been made, and we urge everyone to cooperate with security agencies so that tomorrow's match is safe, free of incidents, and enjoyable for all," said the CS in a statement.

On ticketing, the CS assured Kenyans that CAF has addressed earlier challenges with its online portal.

"The ticketing process is being handled by CAF, and they have put measures in place to resolve past issues. As a government, we are confident in CAF's capacity to manage the process effectively. We encourage fans to purchase tickets early and support Harambee Stars in this crucial match," he added.
