Fighting back tears, Nevinina Omondi recounted their final conversation and the deep emotional toll his death has taken on her and their young son.

The widow of the late teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody, delivered a moving tribute during his requiem mass at Ridgeways Baptist Church on Wednesday.

Fighting back tears, Nevinina Omondi recounted their final conversation and the deep emotional toll his death has taken on her and their young son.

“I think I’m the last person he spoke to. His last words were, ‘I love you, see you soon,’” she said, her voice heavy with grief.

She described Ojwang’s passing as “God’s timing” but admitted the pain was overwhelming. “It’s heavy on me. It’s heavy on my son. He doesn’t even know what’s going on,” she said.

Vowing to remain strong for the sake of their child and Ojwang’s parents, Nevinina said, “Albert has always told me to be courageous… I want people who looked up to him to now look up to me.”

She pledged enduring love for her late husband and promised to stand by his family. “I’ll always love them the way you did,” she said, addressing Ojwang directly.

Nevinina also made a heartfelt appeal to police and public officials to uphold dignity in their treatment of citizens. “I wouldn’t wish any wife, child, or parent to go through this. Let’s treat everyone with care even strangers,” she said.

Ojwang died on June 8 while in custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station following his arrest over a post targeting Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

A postmortem later revealed he succumbed to injuries consistent with assault, ruling out suicide.

His death has sparked national outrage and calls for accountability from human rights groups and civil society.
