Onana though, will be having the last laugh as without him in goal, United were exposed badly.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was left scratching his head following a punishing 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United in the English Premier League Sunday.

Prior to kick-off at St James' Park in Newcastle, the United boss decided to rest number one keeper Andre Onana following a last-minute error against Olympique Lyon in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, preferring Altay Bayandir in goal.

Onana has been under pressure from fans and critics alike over some of his displays, and Amorim obliged by giving him a rest to allow him to disconnect from football.

Onana though, will be having the last laugh as without him in goal, United were exposed badly by a Newcastle side chasing a top five place.

Sandro Tonali opened the scoring for the home side with 24 minutes on the clock, providing a calm finish past Bayandir for a deserved lead.

Kieran Trippier found Alexander Isak free in the middle.

The Swede peeled away from his marker and juggled the ball before dinking it into the path of Tonali, who put it away without hesitation for a 1-0 lead.

United though, hit back through Alejandro Garnacho seven minutes later by producing a neat finish past Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal after a great run on the counterattack from Portugal fullback Diogo Dalot.

The match was perfectly poised at half time but Newcastle came out guns blazing in the second period and retook the lead through two Harvey Barnes goals on 49 and 64 minutes to hand Newcastle the initiative again.

For the second goal, United were caught cold as a delivery into the United box came across the box and fell to Jacob Murphy, who put it back into the danger area where Barnes was free to tap in and make it 2-1 to the home side.

The third goal was a piece of individual brilliance from Barnes, who stole the ball off Mazraoui and drove at the United backline, bursting through the gap before bending one into the top corner to create a two-goal buffer.

Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes added a fourth seven minutes later with a superb finish after Bayindir played the ball right into the Joelinton’s path, whose header fell straight to the goalscorer to add a fourth.

The win lifts Newcastle to 56 points, just one behind second-place Nottingham Forest, who have 57, even though the Magpies have played a game less and could leapfrog Forest if they win their game in hand.

United on the other hand are 14th and with Wolves beating Tottenham earlier, means that United are just three points off 17th place West Ham United.
