'Let the experts work'- Makau Mutua fires back at critics

Mutua responded on social media, emphasizing that he is highly qualified for the position and proud to serve the country under President Ruto’s leadership.
Lawyer, Prof. Makau Mutua has hit back at those criticizing his recent appointment as President William Ruto’s Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs.
Following the public announcement of his new role on Wednesday, Mutua responded on social media, emphasizing that he is highly qualified for the position and proud to serve the country under President Ruto’s leadership.
"I have dedicated my life to the legal field, particularly at the highest levels in the United States. There’s no greater honour than serving my homeland, Kenya," he posted on X.
Mutua further stated that he won’t be swayed by detractors, firmly asserting that he intends to put his legal expertise to use in service of the country—without apology.
"I am sure some of those upset would readily accept the appointment," he said.
"Chill, folks, and let those who are qualified serve the country. I believe my expertise will be of good service to the President and the country."
President Ruto described Prof. Makau Mutua as a renowned legal scholar with extensive expertise in constitutional law and human rights.
Announcing the appointment, Ruto stated, "I have named Prof. Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. He brings invaluable experience in legal, constitutional, and human rights issues. Congratulations to Prof. Mutua."
Prof. Makau Mutua, who previously served as the spokesperson for Raila Odinga’s presidential campaign secretariat ahead of the 2022 elections, has found himself in the spotlight following his appointment to President Ruto’s advisory team—a move many have found ironic.
This is because Mutua had, in the past, made strong declarations against ever working with Ruto.
In a 2020 column published in the Nation newspaper, he wrote a scathing critique of the current president, asserting that Ruto "has always been on the wrong side of history" and that working for him would be unthinkable.
Recounting an approach allegedly made by Ruto’s allies when he was still Deputy President, Mutua said he was stunned by the suggestion to support Ruto’s 2022 bid.
"I slapped myself to make sure I wasn’t in la-la land," he wrote. "Despite the shock, I’ve kept my counsel-until now."
He concluded with a firm rejection: "Mr. Ruto and his campaign should read my lips. The answer is nyet (Russian Translation for 'No!'). I can’t and won’t work with Mr Ruto. Never. Ever. Case closed."
Mutua went even further, claiming that no legitimate civil society figure would associate with Ruto, and described avoiding him entirely.
"Whenever I hear the mention of Mr Ruto, or sense his proximity, I head in the opposite direction. It’s been so since his emergence in Youth for KANU '92," said the lawyer.
