A middle-aged man from Chesingoro village in Kusumek, Kericho County, has been arrested and is currently being held at Litein Police Station for allegedly defiling his one-and-a-half-year-old niece.

According to Kusumek Sub-location Assistant Chief Alfred Korir, the suspect, identified as Justice Kipsigei Cheruiyot, was caught in the act inside his room and apprehended on the spot.

Authorities have launched investigations, and the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court as police continue to gather evidence.

Korir said the suspect was staying with his sister, the mother of the baby girl, at her home. He was nabbed by his sister and members of the public who heard the baby’s distress calls.

The administrator said the child had been left behind by her mother as she went to perform other chores outside the house. It was then that the suspect took the baby girl inside the cubicle and defiled her.

The Chief reported that the mother never imagined her own brother could betray the family by committing such a horrific act against her daughter.

Furious residents descended on the suspect and gave him a severe beating before turning him over to the authorities.

The young girl was first taken to Kapkatet Hospital and later referred to Kericho County Referral Hospital for further specialized care.

Korir cautioned families not to leave their young children in the care of others, even those they trust, warning that such actions could expose them to similar abuses.
