President Ruto vows to expose MP Were’s killers

While addressing residents in Migori County on Sunday, President Ruto affirmed that his administration will deploy state agencies to uncover the truth and apprehend the perpetrators.
President William Ruto has pledged decisive action to bring to justice those behind the killing of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.
While addressing residents in Migori County on Sunday, President Ruto affirmed that his administration will deploy state agencies to uncover the truth and apprehend the perpetrators.
He emphasized that the government is fully committed to protecting the lives of all Kenyans.
"Violence and lawlessness have no place in our society. We must uphold peace, unity, and stability — essential pillars for national progress and economic growth," he stated.
"We will get them, they will not succeed, they will have nowhere to hide, and we will go after their collaborators until we ensure that such an incident does not happen again in the country."
The statement comes just four days after MP Were was gunned down on Wednesday evening, around 7:30 pm, along Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi.
Witnesses at the scene said the lawmaker was ambushed by two individuals on a motorcycle.
One of them allegedly disembarked and shot him at close range, killing him on the spot.
The attackers, whose identities remain unknown, seemed to have specifically targeted the MP, as his driver was left unharmed.
The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that the incident is being investigated as a calculated and deliberate assassination.
Four individuals connected to the murder have been taken into custody over the killing.
In a statement by the Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga on April 4, the National Police Service says the arrest follows an operation conducted by police.
"Upon further analysis of previously obtained leads, officers from the National Police Service swiftly conducted an operation and successfully arrested four suspects who had been positively placed at the crime scene," said the statement.
"Investigators have also recovered crucial evidence linked to the crime, as well as to the perpetrators."
Police say some of the arrested suspects are members of organized criminal gangs, such as "Mjahidin", which has been linked to armed robberies in the Eastlands area of Nairobi.
The death of MP Were has also brought to light the complex persona he carried, as some residents of Kasipul stepped forward to recount their troubling encounters with the late lawmaker—incidents they claim occurred under his orders or influence.
