Ex-Kasipul MP Magwanga escapes assassination plot in Homa Bay

The incident unfolded near his residence in Kabuor Village, Kasipul Constituency, at around 9 p.m.
Homa Bay Deputy Governor and former Kasipul MP Joseph Oyugi Magwanga narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on the night of Sunday, May 11, 2025, in what authorities suspect was a targeted attack.
The incident unfolded near his residence in Kabuor Village, Kasipul Constituency, at around 9 p.m.
According to security sources, Magwanga had changed vehicles shortly before the ambush after receiving reports suggesting he was under surveillance.
The gunmen, unaware of the switch, opened fire on his official vehicle, which was occupied by members of his security team.
The bodyguards returned fire, engaging the assailants in a brief exchange before the attackers fled into a nearby thicket. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
Security agencies have since launched a manhunt for the gunmen and opened investigations into the attempted assassination.
Authorities are also probing possible links to growing political tensions in the area.
This latest development comes just weeks after the killing of sitting Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, which has sparked renewed fears over rising political violence and insecurity in Homa Bay County.
