Fresh border attack claims lives of Turkana fishermen
In Summary

The attack, which happened in the early hours of Thursday morning, has left the Turkana community in mourning and reignited calls for stronger border security.

Turkana Governor Jeremiah Ekamais Lomorukai has condemned the killing of local fishermen along the shores of Lake Turkana by armed men suspected to be from the Dassanech community in Ethiopia.

The attack, which happened in the early hours of Thursday morning, has left the Turkana community in mourning and reignited calls for stronger border security.

Governor Lomorukai described the killings as a continuation of "unacceptable aggression," referring to a similar deadly incident in February.

"This is not the first time our peace and sovereignty have been violated. We painfully recall the February incident where lives were lost in a similar attack," he said.

The governor said he has already met with the County Security Team and urged them to increase patrols along the border with Ethiopia.

He also directed county officials to provide emergency support to the affected families.

"I stand firmly with the affected families and the entire Turkana community in mourning," he said.

In addition, Lomorukai revealed that he had contacted the national security organs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise the matter at a higher level.

"We cannot allow Turkana residents, who depend on the lake for their livelihood, to be turned into targets of cross-border violence," Lomorukai said.

Calling for calm among residents, the governor assured the public that his administration is committed to justice and long-term solutions.

"My administration is fully committed to ensuring justice is pursued and long-term solutions are put in place to protect our people, their livelihoods," he said.

He concluded by expressing his condolences to the families of the victims.
