Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Ababu Namwamba, is mourning the passing of his security aide, Corporal Jonah Kemboi Rotich.

In a tribute posted on his official X account on Sunday, May 25, 2025, Namwamba honored Rotich, describing him as much more than a mere bodyguard.

Namwamba spoke warmly about the close bond he and his family shared with Rotich, describing him as calm, loyal, and deeply honest- steadfast presence through many phases of life, including work, travel, parenting, and faith.

Despite their different religious backgrounds, Namwamba being a Catholic and Rotich a devoted Seventh Day Adventist, the two shared a strong connection.

"We have worked together. We have travelled the world. We have dreamed. We have raised our children. We have built one big family. And we have worshipped our one true God, me as a committed Catholic, him as a dedicated Seventh Day Adventist,"  said Namwamba.

"For eighteen years, Corporal Jonah Kemboi Rotich has been more than just a trusted security aide. He has been a beloved brother and true friend. Family in every sense."

The diplomat also reflected how Rotich symbolized something greater—the possibility of national unity beyond tribal divisions.

Namwamba revealed that Rotich passed away after a long and brave battle with several health challenges. Throughout his illness, Rotich endured with remarkable strength and dignity.

"We are heartbroken by this profound loss and entrust his soul to the Good Lord, praying that his family finds solace in the embrace of Christ," Namwamba stated.

Rotich’s burial is scheduled for June 3, 2025, at his home in Eldoret.
