Governor Nyong’o to set up cold room at Kisumu Airport

The initiative aims to improve airport services and stimulate growth in the horticultural sector.
Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has pledged to establish a cold storage facility and other storage infrastructure at Kisumu International Airport in collaboration with the Kenya Airports Authority.
This initiative aims to improve airport services and stimulate growth in the horticultural sector.
While hosting a delegation from The Fresh Products Exporters Association of Kenya (FPEK), along with fresh produce farmers, trade specialists, and representatives from the Lake Region Economic Block (LREB), Governor Nyong’o emphasized that the project would boost Kisumu International Airport’s capacity to serve as a direct gateway for exporting fresh produce to international markets.
"This development will address a key gap in the fresh produce export supply chain by preserving the quality of farm produce during transit to both regional and global markets," he stated.
He further explained that the project is expected to create considerable economic benefits for farmers and traders from the 14 counties within the Lake Region Economic Block by enabling them to access global markets with fresh, high-quality products.
The visiting stakeholders also recommended that the Kisumu County Government support the establishment of large-scale seedling farms throughout the county, promote advanced fruit grafting methods, and encourage a shift from synthetic fertilizers to organic alternatives to foster sustainable agricultural practices.
Also, in attendance at the event were FPEK CEO Hosea Machuki and Victor Nyagaya, the representative for the Lake Region Economic Block (LREB).
