National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has directed Parliament to launch an urgent investigation into the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of Juja MP George Koimburi, saying the incident raises serious concerns about the safety of lawmakers and growing national security threats.

Speaking in the House on Tuesday afternoon, Wetang’ula said Koimburi, who had been reported missing on Sunday, was later found alive in a coffee plantation under unclear circumstances and is now receiving treatment in a Nairobi hospital.

“I have this morning instructed the Chair of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security to liaise with the Inspector General of Police and relevant security agencies to provide preliminary findings to the House,” he said.

The Speaker added that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had been denied access to the MP at the request of his family.

“The facility is reportedly not allowing visitors, even officers from the DCI who were keen to establish what may have transpired,” said Wetang’ula.

He also directed the Security Committee to visit Koimburi in hospital and brief Parliament on his condition.

But Wetang’ula warned MPs against treating the case as an isolated incident, saying it fits into a larger pattern of rising insecurity targeting elected leaders.

He referred to the recent shooting of Kabondo Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were as another worrying example.

“These cases call for a thorough, coordinated investigation. We must demand answers, not just as leaders but on behalf of all Kenyans,” he said.

The Speaker also urged MPs and the public to take their personal safety seriously.

“Be vigilant. Be conscious of your surroundings and the company you keep, to ensure your safety is not compromised,” he warned.
