BCLB bans celebrities, influencers from promoting gambling in Kenya

The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has banned the use of celebrities, influencers, and content creators in promoting gambling activities as part of new measures to protect the public, especially children, from the effects of gambling.

In a notice dated May 29, BCLB said the new regulations are aimed at promoting responsible gambling and shielding vulnerable Kenyans, including minors, from harm.
The board has now made it mandatory for all gambling advertisements to be submitted to BCLB for approval and then forwarded to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for classification before airing or publication.
"All media outlets shall adhere to the Code of Conduct for Media Practices, 2025," the Board directed.
The new rules also apply to media houses, which must ensure that any gambling-related content they carry has been approved by both BCLB and KFCB.
In addition, the board banned gambling advertisements near schools, religious institutions, and places often visited by children, including playgrounds and shopping malls.
