Umbrellas out and jackets on; Nairobi, Mombasa and several other counties are in for five more days of rain, with the weatherman warning of wet afternoons, chilly nights and sweltering days across different parts of the country.

In the update released on Friday, May 30, Kenya Met said moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central Rift Valley, and the Coast.

The areas expected to receive heavy afternoon showers and thunderstorms include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru and Narok.

"Sunny intervals are expected in the mornings, though occasional rains may occur over a few places. Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places," said Kenya Met.

Moderate afternoon and evening rains are forecasted in Nairobi and other counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi.

These areas will experience cloudy mornings followed by sunny intervals and light showers later in the day.

A similar pattern is expected in Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and parts of Tana River, where morning showers are expected before giving way to sunshine.

The department also issued an advisory warning of cold nights in Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi, where temperatures will drop to between 6°C and 8°C.

At the same time, Kenya Met projected high daytime temperatures of up to 36°C in parts of the Coast, Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin.

These include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi.
